Ponsonby murder case and tiie sentence passed upon Dennis Gunn were considered (it a meeting of the Executive Council yesterday, His Excellency the Governor presiding. It was afterwards announced that His Excellency, acting on and with the advice of his Ministers, sees no reasons why the decision of the court should be interfered with. It wa3 stated at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce that the rate paid for labor at the railway sheds was 12s a day, overtime not being counted until a man had worked eigut hours, no matter the hour of commencement. We have been ask.J to state that the rate is 13s, and that the authorities are scouring the country for labor without much success. j The scheme for improving the New j Plymouth racecourse was again before the Borough Council yesterday, when members of the council, in company with members of the Jockey Club committee, visited the course. The scheme Was outlined to the councillors, who were shown the proposed new course and the lan-1 proposed to be purchased. The next step in the matter will be taken on Monday evening, when the proposal will be discussed by the Borough CouncilThe Farmers' Co-op. Society attention to the sale of Mr. W. J. Bell's "Welwyn" herd of pedigree and grade Friesian cattle at Hawera on Monday. ■Tune 21. The herd comprises a lot of pedigree and grade Friesian cows in real good condition, having been fed on turnips for the past two mouths. They hold the very best records, that of this season being SOOlbs of butter-fat per cow. Farmers who require to add a few wellbred fat cattle to their herds are recommended to attend this stf"
