BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MEETING OF GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE. A meeting of the General Purposes Committee of the New Plymouth Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. Jas. Clarke), in the chair, and Crs. J. Hayden, P. .T. Hill, W. A. Collis, A. S. Brooker, It. L. Farkln, H. V. S. Griffiths, and A. E. Sykes. ONE-MAN CAB. ' It was resolved that subject to the period , being two years from the time the one-man car service commences Instead of 18 months and subject to a clause being inserted that the amended Order-in-Council shall only be operative whilst the Council are running oneman cats, tho Council agree to the following : conditions insisted upon by the Pubic Works Department "It does not appear essential that air equip-' nient should be provided in order that some fonrn of dead man control, possibly a new development, can be applied. Tho Department is prepared to recommend a clause from the provisions requiring dead man control, for a period of 38 months, provided that your Council gives an assurance that it will make ! earnest inquiries amongst the makers of trainway equipment and will, within that period instal a form of control which, though possibly differing from what is commonly known as dead man control, will yet operate In'a similar way. If at the expiration of the period of exemption the Council have not been able to obtain a. dead man control without tho use of compressed air, then compressed air inj stallation must be provided. | WATER WORKS EXTENSION. Messrs. Ceo. Beamish, D. Ness. S. R. Smith, A. F. Bleasdale, and J. Bishop, asked the Council to extend the water supply main along '•ewton Street. Titzro.v. Tho General Manager recommended that the application stand over until the £57,000 loan | has been raised. In tho meantime, the ,J>orough engineer should be instructed to submit an estimate of the cost of replacing deteriorated steel mains in order that thrv . know approximately what amount of .the £IO,OOO allocated for water works In the loan would be available for extension of inn ins. It was resolved that tho petitioners be inforimed that the Council will consider their l application after the loan is raised.

RESERVE T. The sub-comnilt.tee submitted conditions to be embodied In the proposed lenae of Reserve T for three years to (ho North Taranakl (.Ticket Association. This evoked considerable discussion, the Mayor holding that the Cricket Association should havo negotiated througn the Western Park Board. Ors. H>ll and Hayden, in moving and seconding the adoption of the report, considered that it was useless referring the matter to Hie Western PaTk Board, who were only concerned in giving the reserve to the Education Board The Mayor moved as an amendment, that the report be referred to the Werfern Park Board for their approval. This was seconded h> Cr Parkin and lost, only the mover and oeronder and Cr. Sykes voting in its favor The report was then adopted, with the deletion ot one clause which it was considered was covered by another, and with the addition that the forma! lease has to be submitred for approval to the Western Park Board as well ns the Council.
