PERSONAL.
The retirement on superannuation of Mr. E. H. Wilmot, Surveyor-General, is gazetted. The Rev. James Paterson, of Wellington, who recently celebrated his ninetieth birthday, was the recipient of congratulations from the Wellington Presbytery and many private friends.
The Rhodes scholar selection committee met at Government House, Wellington, yesterday, and selected Mr. Harold Gladstone Miller (Victoria University College) as Rhodes scholar for New Zealand in place of Mr. H. A. McKenzie, son of Professor H. McKenzie, who has relinquished, his scholarship in order to keep the N.Z.E.F. scholarship which he is now holding in France. Mr. Miller is 22 years of age, and was educated at Masterton. The only other candidate was a graduate from Auckland University College. The late Mrs. Claridge, whose death took place in Hawera on Thursday, arrived in New Zealand 64 years ago, in the sailing ship Oliver Lang, with her late husband and one child. They lived in Wanganui several years. Since 1830 deceased (says the Star) resided in Hv wera. She leaves two sons (Mr. N. J. Claridge, of the Government Printing Office, Wellington, and Mr. J. H. Claridg-;, of the Otorohanga Times), and tw.> daughters (Mrs. R. H. Sheppard, Devonport, and Mrs. R. J. Squire, Hawera); also 22 grand-children. Six grand-sons took part in the late war in the armv and navy, two having given their lives.
