"If the policy of the Government U shown to be in the best interests of the whole of the people, then I am going to give the Government everyounce of support that I possibly can," said Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., at the opening of the Winter Show yesterday. Mr. Smith added that he had been told that it was tho Government's policy to construct all the main railway lines first, and he wished to remind Mr. Nosworthy, who was paying his first visit to Taranaki, that Taranaki was the moat thickly populated rural portion of the Dominion, and was the greatest producing district. If the Government would recognise this, it should also recognise that the completion of the Taranaki railways would increase the production of the province, and for this reason they should all be regarded as main railways. (Applause.) Application was made to the Education Board yesterday by two suburban seliool committees for the erection of residences for the head-teachers in each case. The difficulty of securing houses was stressed, and the Board was asked to make application for grants for the purpose. The chairman remarked that the Department's policy was not in the direction of erecting residences in towns on account of the number of these at present not being occupied by the persons for whom they were intended. Some members of the Board expressed the' opinion that the trouble arose through the tcacliers' residences being unsuitable. If the Department erected residences which were reasonably convenient the teachers would not object to occupy them. The Board decided to proceed with tlie applications.
