U.S PRESIDENCY.
WHO WILL BE CANDIDATES? SEVERAL NAMES MENTIONED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Received June 9, 7.30 pjn. New York, June 8. The Republican National Convention for the selection, of Presidential candidates opened at Chicago in unique circumstances, in that it is impossible to indicate who is likely to be chosen. Senator Johnson, Mr. Lowden, and General Wood are probables. Owing the absence of the Party bosses, which is due to a desire to place unrestricted power in the delegates' hands to select their own nominees, the Convention is apparently at a complete loss to make a selection. Senator H. C. Lodge (Leader of the Republican Party), who is chairman, was loudly applauded when lie criticised President Wilson for proceeding to the Peace Conference because he was unable to trust anyone else. Senator' Lodge denounced the Armenian mandate and the Government's futile polioy toward! Mexico.—Aus.-N.js. Cable Assn. Received June 9, 5.5 p.m. New York, June 8. Senator HSram Johnston continues to be the favorite Republican nomination for the Presidency. Other possibilities include Messrs. Charles Evan Hughes and Leonard Wood, Governor Lowden, of Illinois, Senator Knox, and Messrs. Poindexter, Butler and Harding.
The Democrats will hold a convention at San Francisco. Mr. McAdoo is the undeniable favorite, though Mr. Hoover may prove a dark horse.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
