WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) June 5. The Fire Brigade Ball, held on King's Birthday night, was a distinct success, the Clifton Hall being uncomfortably crowded for pleasant dancing. About 00 couples took the floor, and there were many spectators. The firemen left nothing undone to make the evening enjoyable. The hall was nicely decorated with (lags, greenery, and the brigade's gear. The orchestra consisted of L. Feek (piano), P. Feck (cornet), C. Cole (violin), and T. McKoy (triangle), whilst extras were played by Mesdames Farquhar and Potter. Messrs. G. Skelton, Taylor, Parry, G. !'-ascr, W. Spurdle, K. Procter and A. Goodwin were M.C.'s. The supper arrangements were in the hands of the following:—Mesdames C. Limmer, L. Fraser, J. Crow, W. Sampson, W. Procter, W. Spurdle, W. Trim, G. Roberts, and Farquhar. The takings were in tbu vicinity of £4O. On Friday the hall was given over to the children, when there was another packed hall. On Thursday a beast went for a skate over the Manokoriki hillside on to tha public footpath. This is certainly dangerous to pedestrians, and a fence round the top erf the hill would be a safeguard.
The Soldiers' and Civilians' Club mart brought in the net >•■•■ - of £2fi Is lid. Another stepping-sloi.. to the proposed club.
Some irresponsible persons took charge of a Stratford cur which was standing outside the Clifton Hall on Thursday evening last, evidently bent on a joy rid l .'. After negotiating the kerbing and footpath by the Club Hotel, a broken axle resulted. When the owners got in to go home tlioy found out what had been done, and had to hire a car to get home It is a pity the culprits are not known. A pretty wedding was solemnised at St. John's' Church on Thursday, the Rev, G. H. flavin officiating. The contracting parties were Miss Amy Walker, fifth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Walker, of Blenheim, and Mr. Norman Oliappell, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Chappell, of Waitara. The bride was given away by Air. T. R. Ford, Mr. F. D. Short acting as best man. The bridesmaids were Miss Bird, of Nelson, and Miss B. Button, of Waitara, After the ceremony the guests were entertained in the Foresters' Hall, when the usual toasts wore honored. The happy couple left by motor on their wedding tour, after which they will take up their residence In Wellington. ,
