The trouble started with the abdication of the Gefftin Emperor on November 9, Ml, And from thai date Germany beeajge a Republic. The Cfttocil of People's Commissioners m Berlm took over the Government of in* country, the reigning princes of the Federal States being either deposed or abdicating. The existing Imperial Parliament was declared dissolved, and ar« ratunnvmts were made for summoning a H«a«l»V Amemhry, The elections were Mkf ift Wntiary, IMB, and resulted, on .the basts of propartioßfll representation, to llie return of the following parties": Majority Socialists 183; Centre (Catholic) Party, 88; Democrats 75; Conservatrn, 42; Independent Socialists, 22; Gento* People's Party, 21; Bavarian PeMjatto' League, 4; minor parties, B; total, 421. The National Assembly was summoned to meet at Weimar on February 6, and on February 11, 1019, it elected Friedrkh Eberfc first President of the German Republic. Cm February 16, 1910, a Cabinet was appointed with Philip SBheidemami as Prime Minister. The Schiedemann Ministry held office nntfl June 1919, when it resigned rather than sign the Peace Treaty. It Was- succeeded by an Administration under Herr Bauer, a Majority Socialist, had that Ministry renamed in fewer until the revolution of this year.
