Mr. R. Dunn, of Auroa, President of the Taranaki Farmers' Union, arrived in New Plymouth by the mail train last night. Mr. J. H. Quilliam, who has been absent from New Plymouth for about nine months on an extended holiday abroad, returned home yesterday morning. Dr. 'McCleland, who, after his recent illness, went to Auckland for rest and recuperation, has now returned, being able to resume his professional practice.
Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., member of the Taranaki Education Board, and Mr. Moore, Board's architect, were in Hawc-s yesterday, and went with Mr. R. S, Sage to inspect the property suggested as a Technical School Hostel.
Mr. G. H. Bullard, of New Plymouth, Commissioner of Crown Lands for the. district of Taranaki, has, been advised of his transfer to Auckland in a similar capacity, in succession, to Mr. H. M Skeet. "\
A London cablegram says that Mr. Low, the New Zealand cartoonist, who recently left the Sydney Bulletin to take up a position in London, has married Miss Madeline Kenning, of Auckland.
Mr. A. R. Jordan, who was formerly First Assistant Deputy-Public Trustee at Christchureh, has received the appointment of District Inspector to the Public Trust Department for Dunedin, Invercargill, and Timaru.
Mr. W. S. Percy, the popular comedian, who is now firmly-established as one of London's most popular music-hall artists, contemplates an early visit to Australi.i and New Zealand—if "his five-years-ahead engagements will allow it. At a special meeting of the Hawern Gun Club, held on Friday evening, Mr. B. Siever's resignation as secretary was accepted with regret, and a hearty vole of thanks was passed to him for his previous good work. At the closing of the Riverlea School for the holidays, the master, Mr, Ewar:, was farewelled and presented with a travelling rug and Mento flask by the parents of the scholars. Miss Cameron, who was leaving to be married, was presented with a butter dish and serviette ring.
A Wellington telegram states that Mr. Peter Still, a prominent bowler and chess player, aged <W, and the governing director of Littlejohn and Son, became ill on Saturday night while representing Wellington in a chess match against Canterbury, and died yesterday. The Hon. W. Nosworthy, Minister of Agriculture, accompanied by his private secretary, Mr. L. C. Mitchell, arrived in New Plymouth by the mail train last night, and was met at the railway station by Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P. To-day Mr. Nosworthy will perform the official opening of the New Plymouth Winter Show. He will leave for Wellington tomorrow morning.
A complimentary social was tendered at Gore last night to the Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister of Internal Affairs, marking his elevation to the Cabinet (says a telegram from Gore). The Mayor of Gore presided. Sir W, Fraser and tho Hon. K. P. Hawke were present, besides representative men from all Southland. The proceedings were enthusiastic, and complimentary references were made by speakers to the Minister's indefatigable work for Southland and the Dominion generally. A telegram from Invercargill states that A. W. Eodger, chairman of the Electric Power Board, was waited upon by a representative deputation of commercial nien and others, and presented with an address and a draft for £2OOO, in recognition of his services to the province as chairman of the Southland League and Electrification Committes, which carried out the preliminary work in connection with the provincial electrical scheme. The Mayor, who acted as spokesman, and also made the presentation, referred in high terms to Mr. Rodger's patriotic and unselfish efforts to advance the interests of the province, which had been crowned with such splendid success.
