DEPARTING ASIATICS.
HAUL BY CUSTOMS DEPARTMENT. Auckland, June 1. A number of Chinese and Hindus on board the Maheno were searched by tho Customs officers, just prior to the vessel leaving for Sydney last week. The law provides that not more than £5 in gold, and an equal amount in silver, may be taken out of New Zealand by Asiatics, and it was with a view to ascertaining if Hindus or Chinese wore carrying more than these amounts, that the search was instituted. The officers found that, whereas the Hindus only had the amount allowed, one Chinese exceeded it by £2, another by £B, and a third by £l2. As a result of the search the Consolidated Fund has benefited to tho extent of £22, this repre- | eenting £2O in silver and £2 in gold.
