Lady Ball was the elect of the public in the first division of the Jervois Handicap, but l'ourth was her best, the winner turning up in Royal Abbey, one of Hannon's team The winner was always running in a. har.dy position till the straight, when he raced past Night- Time, who made most of the running. Tulpa, who linisbed tnira, was going o.i well. White l'epln was among the also starteds, who may improve. Garry Owen, who was favorite In the Maiden Steeplechase, looked a likely winner going up the hill the last time, hut stumbled, leaving Oakleigh to go on and win from John liui-ny, with Garry Owen (remounted) iu third place. It transpired his rider Keepa had a broken collarbone by the fall. Yankee Jacs fell the last time on tho hill, but his prospects were not bright at that stage. Mojopole fell early. Ngata, who won tho second division of the Jervois Handicap, did so impressively In the strrigUt, for he was - well back at one stage and got up in time to defeat Scrap o' Paper and Khublal Khan, who were boing preclatuied Inside the distance. Scottish Knight gave the impression when he finished ft-urth that he may loom up over a longer courte before tho meeting concludes. Ohiti, ridden by Gray, was also finishing on well, while Kareao may be improved by the racing. The Maiden Hurdles went to Kereone, who was always in front, and defeated a quiet selection in .Meltchikoft decisively. They wete not a good lot, while Glenspiro and Micdle Marl; were numbered among those who fell. Lochella proved all that was said of him hy winning the Grsat Northern Hurdles in attractive fashion, after being among the rear markers until the last mile, when his rider Fe..ding) moved him up gradually to Mill o' Gowrie, who had always been out in front. Three furlongs from home Lochella was'alongside the leader, and once In the straight he won comfortably by four lengths, with Slow Coach third, seven lengths behind. liarniau's candidate, Pendoun, wan rourth. Luperino and Sir Sole were disappointments, wh.-.c Lord Nagar fell at tho second fence, and Omahu, in the final round, up to which stage he was going well. Cynic did not go as kind as expected. Lochella was ridden very confidently throughout, and kept away from trouble. He fenced so well and woe so handsomely, that, given a fine day on Saturday, it looks hard to choose anything btforo him in the Steeplechase. The Cornwall Handicap winner. Glen Canny, was always going nicely In front, though Trespass threw them out a stiff challenge In the straight. Tho pair were seven lengths in front of Parisian Diamond at the close, the latter being troubled by his weight, though he was not ridden a good race. Cashmere was not good enough, but Bine Cross got up fourth. Alteration may b3 better with tho race, while Archie ivas ruiH-ing on well, and his rider was bumpered by losing control of a stirrup. They were n, poor lot that contested the Hunt Club Hurdles, and the leading places were filled by well-seasoned moderates in Koura ] and Totara Jack, with Mestee third, mid Gladwin fourth. Shell Shock made the running for a mile, and may he better later on after some racing. Golden Bubble, another of Gray's mounts, failed to materialise in the Members' Haadicap, Ws weight, evidently stopping him. The winner turned up in Comedy Prnce, a classy sou or Comedy King, who, though he had No. 1 position, and was pushed back Into a bad position early, but afterwards got through and won in determined fashion from Tamaroa, with Hvllus third. The latter finished well on the outside, and many thought he hud won. Arran was fourth. ' King Lupin showed a lot of pace out iu front for five furlongs, but then stopped quickly. Crowhurst may do belter before long as the race should work improvement iu him. An inquiry was held Into some humping which took place of which tha winner got all th£ worst of the deal.
