WORK FOR WINTER.
OUTLOOK IN NEW PLYMOUTH.
MEN NOW UNEMPLOYED.
Reports from various parts of the Dominion indicate that this winter the prospects of employment for all classes of labor are very satisfactory, practically 110 applicants for employment being on the books of the various lAbor Department's bureaux. The position in New Plymouth, however, is in striking contrast to these generally favorable accounts.
Since April I*2, there have betn It applications for employment of various descriptions on the books of the New Plymouth branch of the Labor Department, and a Daily News representative was informed yesterday that of this number only one applicant has been placed. This unsatisfactory state of affairs is largely accounted for by the fact that employers do not make u»e of the department when seeking: 1 labor. In fact, since April 1, not a single enquiry for labor has been received 'from an employer by the New Plymouth office. It is interesting to note'tije nature of labor that men seek. Of the 17 on the books theTe are Sixi general laborer* (one of whom secured , work), three farm laborers, three clerks, 'two slaughtermen, one electrician, and one car driver. There was also an application from a man in Australia, who desired to secure a position as a milder. Four, of his family could also help in this direction. Yet, in Taranaki, the home of dairying, employment could not be found for this family! In addition to those who #lled in forms, several did not have their names placed upon the books of the department when they found that there was a very poor prospect of securing whrk.
It is understood that carpenters and skilled workers generally are in demand in the town. Laboring work, however, is rather slack. This is to a great extent accounted for by the difficulty in securing supplies for building purpose*. Though immigrants, especially from Home", are entering the Dominion in fairly large numbers, few seem to be finding their way to New Plymouth and district. Only twcJ are upon the unemployed list here. This, of course, is only known to be certain in regard to male immigrants, for the Labor Defwxtment here is exclusively a men's emt ploy men t bureau \
