DIRECT IMPORTS.
STEAMER FOR NEW PLYMOUTH LEAVING LONDON IN JULY. It is understood that arrangements «ra being made for one of the Shaw, SaviU liners to make a trip from the United Kingdom direct to New Plymouth. A New Ply-mouth firm has made Arrangements to import 1000 tons of basic slag from Middlesborough (England), and if the additional space on the vessel carrying the cargo can be made up at London by imports for Taranaki, the steamer will come direct to New Plymouth. It is proposed that the steamer should.leave London towards the end of July. An important meeting of importers is called by the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce for to-morrow afternoon to discuss the possibilities of arranging for a regular service of direct steamers from England to New Plymouth. Captain Chudley, marine superintendent of the Shaw, i>avill Company, who is at present in New Plymouth, will attend the meeting. As the question affects the whole of Taranaki, a representative meeting ii hoped for.
