Captain Chudley, marine superintendent for the Shaw, Savill Company, is at present in New Plymouth. He is accompanied by Mrs. Ohudley. Queen Alexandra is suffering from a severe bronchial attack, which is now subsiding. Her vision is impaired owing to a blood vessel of the eye breaking during a violent attack of coughing.

The Mayor of New Plymouth, the general manager, and the electrical engineer were appointed last niglit to represent the Borough at tJhe Taranaki Hydro-Elec-tric League Conference. General Sir William Birdwood will arrive at Wellington from Sydney on Monday next. The Mayor of Wellington has arranged to accord the distingushed officer a civic welcome on Tuesday, June lßt - •

The following appointments at Dublin Castle are announced in a cable from London:—Sir John Anderson, Chairman of the Board of Inland Revenue, has been appointed Under-Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant, jointly with Mr. James MacMahon, while Mr. A. W. Cope, Direc-tor-General of Organisation in the Ministry of Pensions, succeeds Sir John James Taylor as Assistant Under-Secre-tary. Both appointments are temporary. Sir John Taylor retires on the completion of lengthy.service, and is appointed an Irish Privy 1 Councillor.

The late Mr. Frederick H. Broadman, wfho died at Oaonui last week, had an interesting career. He was born in Cheshire, England, in 1840, and joined the Bengal Horse Artillery (East India Company) when eighteen years of age. He was attached to the 4th battery, then stationed at Meinmer. His stories of army life were very interesting. He landed at Hokitika. (New Zealand) in 1867, and was well known on the West Coast, where he resided for many years. Deceased came to Taranaki sonv» eight years ago. He lea/ves a wife and nine children.
