COMMERCIAL.

CANTERBURY MARKETS. Christehurch, May 18. The oats market continues firm, although there is no quotable change in prices. Up to 5s lid f-o.b. South Island is freely offered for A grade Gartons, equal to 5s 2d at country stations. Unfortunately shipping disabilities are having an unsettling effect on operations with the North Island. Chaff is very firm, but the same disabilities affect the operations. Potatoes are very dull, and the outlook is not very bright if the Australian import prohibition is continued for any length of time. It is feared that the Commonwealth action is due solely to the export last December of potatoes of inferior quality, which were damaged, but not diseased.
