The annual meeting of the British Chamber of Commerce at Shanghai adopted a resolution favoring China's clttim to Shantung. Mr. A. \V. Burkill, chairman of the directorate, in a speech, said Japan was taking deliberate steps to control the whole and the surrounding harbor docks, wharves, and railroad terminals at Tsingtao, and every obstacle was being put in the way of other nations acquiring any property in the business centres. —Aus.-N.Z. Received May 19, 10.15 p.m. Pekin, May 19. Following repeated offers of the Northern Government for a resumption of peace conferences, the Southern Government telegraphed that it would accept offers provided the North agreed to the abrogation of the l!) 18 Chino-Japan-ese military pact. The North replied that the withdrawal of Allied troops from Siberia nullified the pact, and pointed out the necessity of immediate peace to save China economically as well as politically.—Aus.-N.Z.
