His Honor Mr. Justice Chapman, who lias been presiding over the sittings of the Supreme Court at Mew Plymouth, left for Auckland by the Rara'wa last night. It was announced in Wellington last night that Sir William Hemes takes over from Jlr. Alassey 11m portfolio of Labor (says a Press telegram). Jlrs. Annie Lloyd, aged Go, an old resident of IJawera, was found dead in bed yesterday. The King and Queen will entertain Mr. \\. A. Watt (Australian Federal Treasurer) and his wife at luncheon at Buckingham Palace (says a London 'cable). ilr. Watt spends to-morrow with the Lord Chief Justice, and will bo sworn in as a Privy Councillor on Monday.
At the recent examination of the University of New Zealand fir. T. Russell Ritchie passed his final exam and qualified for the diploma of public health (says a telegram from Wellington). Dr. W F Findlay and Dr. A. 1). S. Whyte passed the tirst examination for the diploma.
Messrs. R. Ellison (London representative of the National Dairy Association), Coley, Dudley, Gougli, and Owen Thomas (representatives of the Co-op-erative Wholesale Society of England), who have been visiting Taranaki, motored to Mount Kgmont yesterday. The party left for Auckland by the Rarawa last night.
The denth is reported from Sydney of a well known ex-New Zealanller, Mr. Dugald Thompson, who for many years had been in business as a hotelkecper m Newcastle Mr. Thompson was for a considerable time proprietor of the Criterion Hotel in New Plymouth and took a keen interest in racing, having at that time raced some of the Dominion's host performers. The Bishop of Nelson has received news that the Rev. Canon Hughets, 8.A., Vicar of St. Peter's, Melbourne, has been elected to the Bishopric of Roekhampton, Queensland. The Bishop-elect was educated at Trinity College within the University of Melbourne. The college has now produced seven bishops for the Anglican Church in Australasia, viz, llishop Green (late of Ballarat), Bishop Stretch (late Bishop of Newcastle, N.S.W.), and the present Bishops of Wangaratta, Bathurst, Nelson, Newcastle, and Kocklmmpton. The new Bishop is a brother of Brigadier-General Hughes, of the A.I.F. Death has claimed another of the small remaining band of Albcrtland pioneers in the person of Mr. William Chadwick, of Pahi, who passed away 111' the Paparoa .Hospital on Tuesday, in liia eightieth year. The deecased was a native of Rochdale, England, and came to New Zealand by the ship Gertrude. He resided for a time in the Upper Pahi River district and subsequently removed to the Pahi township. He then entered business as a storekeeper and sawmiller. He was well-known and widely respected. Mrs. S. Lush (of New Plymouth) is a daughter of the deceased.
