NEW PLYMOUTH LABOR PARTY
THE COLORED LABOR QUESTION. The usual fortnightly meeting of the New Plymouth branch of the Labor Party was held on Tuesday evening, in the Workers' Social Hall. Mr. G. T. Langley occupied the chair. Several visitors were present, including Mr. O'Dea, President of the Hawera branch of the Labor Party. The meeting had been called for the purpose of hearing an address by Mr. Leo Sim, of Hurford Road, on "State'' Banking," but unfortunately he was unable to attend. The members discussed the colored labor, question. It was poimed out that the Hindu, although belonging to a colored race, is still a British subject, and is therefore entitled to the privileges and protection which we, as British subjects, enjoy. The indentured labor question in the Islands was also dealt with, and much light was thrown on the horrible and barbarous methods by which these natives are treated, and the conditions under which they have to work and live, conditions that are countenanced by New Zealand authority. It ivas also pointed out that the black and yellow races are in a semi-civilised state only through their environment, and if given the same facilities of education, etc.. as are obtainable in Europe, the colored races would advance themselves to the same standard as the Europeans. These -fortnightly meetings are becoming increasingly popular amongst the members.
