DISTRICT NEWS.
WAITOITOI. (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) The children fram the country attending l|ie reception to the Prince of Wales In New Plymouth owe a debt of gratitude to Mrs. Burgess nnd the ladies vrho assisted her fOT the manner in which their comfort was attended to, whilst the ladles In charge of thci little ones speak in high terms of praise of that, lady for her thoughtfulness In seeing that the visiting school chldren had their wants looked to prior to those fortunate enough to resldo in New Plymouth. Acta of courtesy like this are highly appreciated by country visitors, and do a lot to promote the good feeling which should always exist between those residing In the urban told provincial districts. A most SMCsaful Catholic Church social was held In the Urenui Hal! on Thursday evening last, and was well attended by visitors from all parts of the district. Between the dances, songs were contributed by Miss M, IVingman, of Waltara, the Misses Zoe and "P. Sheard (Urenui), and Messrs T. S. O'Neill, lies Forges, and Fitzgerald (Drenul), whilst Mis? Bain (Waltara) danced an Irish Jig and Highland fling. . All the Items were well rendered, and the audience showed appreciation by hearty applause. The music was supplied by Mr. Murray Fowler, of Waltara, and left nothing to be desired, extm being played by Misses Murray and McCracken, and Mr. FraseiJ. Mr. C. Kumball carried out the duties of M.C. most efficiently, and during the evening a very welcome supper was handed round.
The children attending the Mt. Messenger School had a very enjoyable picnic on the IVaitoltoi Beach on Thursday last. The was perfect, and Mr. Hamblln ran two trips With his 'bus for the convenience of parents and children. During the afternoon games and races we're Indulged In, and the youngsters had a royal time, and did full justice to the good things which were prorlded for their comfort.
Owing to Indlsposlton, Mr. A. H„ Halccimbe, Master of the North Taranakl .Hunt Club, was unable to be present at the opening moot of the season at Mr. Les BlrdlLng's propurty at Waltara on Thursday. Visitors 6penk In high terms of the hospitality dispensed by Mr. and Mrs. Birdtlng, who always make the members of the hunt and their friends most welcome on these occasions. At the invitation of Mr. C. Wilson, a number of friends-assembled at his residence on Saturday evening last, when a piost Interesting address was given by Mr. Cooper, who. together with Mr. Fowler, Is conducting a mission In this and the surrounding district During the evening several hymns were sung. These gentlemen also held a service in the schoolroom on Sunday evening last, which was fairly well attended. It Is reported that Mr. A. Carr, who for the past two years has been a resldeftt of Waltoltol, and is one of the directors of the local dairy company, has disposed of his farm to Mr. Bcaurliamp, nt a figure quite in accordance with ruling rates Mr. Carr and his family have miade a large number of friends during their sojourn here, and much r arret will he felt nt their departure. We are also losing another of our neighbours In Mr. E. Marsh, who has been sharemilklng for Mr. A. Smith for several years past, and who has recently sold Thorndttle lo Messrs MeEldowney. "Ned" Is most popular In tho district., being always willing to do a good turn, and all will wish him and hl» family every success In their new home, which. I understand, is to bo Urutl, where he Intends milking on shares for Mr. I/. Jones. I understand Mr Morris Is talcing up his residence on tho property recently acquired from Mr. S. Sutton at the Mlml. This will mean an addition to the local school roll of three or four more children, and the building will be taxed to Its utmost to accommodate j all those attending, The necessity for some alterations giving enore room is getting more urgent every day, and parents would be gl'ld to hear of some steps being trten in the matter.
Die factory is now running everv other day, and fanners are rapidly "drying off" their herds. As most of the cows come In fairly early in this district, It Is now getting time to turn them out to allow of their coming In in good condition next spring, which, with a good fiush of young grass, Is one of the most essential points tn ensure big yields [ suppose we are all more or less given to grumbling and complaining of our lot, but when one thinks of the dry seasons thnt have been experienced in the South Island and Hawka's Bay district, and comnare them with tho favorable weather and feed conditions enjored in North Taranakl, it must he admitted that we have a lot to he thankful forr. .evsn with the coal and railway troubles, and shortage of be.nzlne, etc., given in. A resident who has-* been In this district for nearly twenty years, and thought, he was fairly well acquainted with the settlers, received rather a shock the other day on visiting a function In Urentil, when he found thnt for every person he knew, there were two or three that were perfe'et strangers to hint. Since the land boom has set In we have a floating population that would give ths olden days of gold mine rushes a start, and probably a bad beating.
