The decision arrived at by the local committee representing various labor unions in connection ivith the jockeys' dispute is not likely to have any eil'eet on .Saturday's Royal meeting at Ricearton, as nearly all the visiting horses have arrived.
LEADING RIDERS PUNISHED. AUCKLAND DISTRICT COMMITTEE'S ACTION. The report of the inquiry instituted by the stewards o£ the Avondale Jockey Club into the recent strike of jockeys ut the race meeting held by that body Inst month, and incidents connected therewith, came before the members of the Auckland District Committee at a special meeting held on Friday, the Hon. lv Mitehelson presiding. Messrs. L. H. Hewitt, E. C. Rae, and J. B. O'Shea, who were summoned to appear before the committee, were present and were examined. The meeting extended over several hours.
In each case of the riders mentioned ■suspension for the remainder of the season was decided.upon. Hewitt was held to be guilty of refusing to sign evidence given by him, of inciting riders to break their engagements, of promoting concerted action for the purpose of embarrassing the management of the club, and ol having refused to attend me'etings to which he had been summoned by the Avondale stewards. E. C. Rae's suspension wa3 based on the grounds of aiding and abetting Hewitt in inciting riders to break their engagements, and of promoting concerted action with the object of embarrassing the management of the club in the conduct of the meeting. J. B. O'Shea was suspended in that Without sufficient grounds he broke his engagement to ride at the meeting, that he took part in concerted action for the purpose of embarrassing the management of the club, and that he refused to attend two meetings to which he was summoned by the Avondale stewards. J. Conquest was- also called to answer a report against him that he broke his engagement to ride and participated in the concerted action of the other jockeys, but it not being clear that the notice had reached him his case was allowed to stand over till next meeting. Other jockeys reported for participa- I tion in the strike were: L. Manson, AMcCormack, and Ashley Reed. These jockeys having been licensed in other districts, the report and evidence concerning their cases, it is understood, will be forwarded by the Avondale .Tockey Club to the District Committee having jurisdiction. It is understood to be possible that the stewards of the Avondale Jockey Club may later make a supplementary report involving the names of other participants in the strike.
