EGMONT RACING CLUB< STEEPLECHASE MEETING. MAEQUETEUR WINS THE JIcRAE .MEMORIAL.
TLe Egmonf Racing Club wore very fortunate louanliiip; tlio weather conditions for tlie opening day of their winter meeting at Hawera yesterday. Though a cold wind blew, the sun shone throughout the day.
The attendance was very large, and must easily constitute a record for a winter meeting. The course, which was in good condition, a tribute to the work of Mr. A. Morse, was holding at the start, but improved as the day went ,on. Racing throughout was very interesting, the fields in every event being large, while the majority of the finishes were close. The judge (Mr. J, Cameron) hoisted his decisions promptly and correctly.
Speculation throughout the day was very brisk, the totalisator handling £35,919 for the eight races, as compared with £5£,623 for seven faces on the first day last year. In the absence of Mr. O'Callaglian, Mr. Moore had charge of the machine. Mr. Gladstone represented the Government. Mr. McMalion (stipendiary steward) was present, hut there were no enquiries. In the steeplechases there, were several falls, but no serious accidents. The whole day passed off most onjoynblv, the only feati.re to mar it being the delay in starting the races. The programme was about an hour and a half late, the last race being run practically in the dark. This was due to the big fields causing delay at the tote, and also at the slirt, but Mr. O'Connor was most patientMr. V. B. Stratton, the secretary, carried out hw duties efficiently. Mr. Whittle bad charge 'of the refreshment booth, and the eat firing was in the hands of Dustin, Ltd. The Hawera "Rand, under Conductor Gould, rendered an enjovablo y,ropramme of music.
