TOLL GATES.
NOT FAVORED BY HON. J. G. COATES. In reply to a letter from the Elgmont County Council asking for permission to erect four toll-gates in different parts of the Egmont County, the Hon. J. Q. Coates (Minister of Public Works). stated that toll-gates were objectionable for many reasons. The Minister said the Public Works Act, 1908, enabled the Council to obtain a warrant whereby contributions could be collected from the adjoining local authorities, whose inhabitants use the roads in question. If such local authorities were unwilling to pay the pro- • portions which the Council considered should be paid, a commission would be set up, definitely fixing the proportions. He therefore asked that the Council would kindly consider the matter further, and endeavor to obtain fair con- *
tributions from the adjoining local authorities rather than establish tollgates.
The chairman reported that a deputation, consisting of Councillors Campbell, Young, O'Brien, and himself, had waited on the Hon. J. G. Coates at Stratford and asked permission to erect toll-gates, pointing out that the only alternative was an increased subsidy from the Government.
The question of applying for a commission was deferred yesterday until 4 full Council was present,
