£IOOO PARK FUND.

APPLES AND CHRYSANTHEMUMS. ABOUT £l7O RAISED. There was something particularly attractive and pleasing in the display made on Saturday on the stalls in Devoj Street, in connection with the effort on' behalf of the Pukekura Park £IOOO funfl. The plans were made by Mrs. Q. U. Burgess and carried out by a band of willing and indefatigable women workers who readily rallied to her assistance. Some members of the Park Board, and a few who are accustomed to help in efforts that are made for tb? advancement and improvement:, of the town's assets, also gave some help in the erection and decoration of stalls and in the carting of goods to the different stalls. A number of High School girls also gave valuable assistance, and in addition served morning and afternoon tea in Mrs. Burgess' room* to the other workers. The response to the appeal for gifta had been better than was ever expected, and what was really intended to be just a side line of the main effort developed into a Mart Day, which gave the towi» an appearance such as it was accustomed to wear almost weekly during the war period. Apples and chrysanthemums were the chief articles for sale, but there were also other fruite, as well as sauces, pickles, and meats in abundance, and a splendidly stocked stall of vegetables. There were in all about 100 cases of apple* given for the day, and when it is said that all of these, and indeed every other article received, were disposed of, anideatof the readiness and generosity with which the public supported the effort may be gained. When the day was over the only article which remained unsold was the sheep which had been given* for the weightguessing competition. Large quantities of apples were displayed for sale in baskets which Willing workers had made from the native flax, while other baskets also contained quantities of delicious looking fruit which tempted the passers-by, and by the end of the day over £SO had been taken at this stall alone. The meat stall which was in Mr. C. D. LigUtband's shop in Currie Street, which he kindly lent for the day, did very good business. it 'contained a huge quantity of meat which had been boiled and potted by some of the women workers, and was displayed for sale in dishes and vessels of ever! conceivable shape and size and design. There were also ox tails and kidneys; and all were disposed of at an early hour. Donations came in freely, and these will bo nil acknowledged in due course, and when the day's takings werjt totalled, it was found that the sum of about £l7O had been raised. , . , A number of competitions were .conducted and the resHlts were as follow: Dressing case, B.
