GENERAL CABLES.

It is semi-officially announced in Tokio that the fourteenth Japanese division defeated four thousand Bolsheviks in the vicinity of Khabarovsk, Siberia, on April 20. A,meeting of the transportation section of the railway union at Melbourne decided to demand doublwpay during the whole of the Prince's vim, owing to the strain due to increased traffic. At the Brisbane Rifle Association meeting, J. Cadden (Brisbane Railway Club) won the King's Prize. The first lady member has been elected to the Parliament of South Africa, Mr 3. Jollie winning the Umtali seat as the responsible Government candidate.

A Bill has been introduced into the United States authorising loans amounting to 250,000,000 dollars to American purchasers of German goods, and permitting the war finance corporation to accept German securities.

A correspondent of the Paris Matin declares that the first task France has at the Spa Conference is to demand priority of payment of the indemnity in favor of the invaded territory. The correspondent adds that if priority is not conceded the French Government may prefer not to conclude an agreement, but tc rely on its own means of compelling Germany to pay. Owing to a heavy demand from the drought areas forage is scarce in Sydney, and prices are exceptionally high. The price of foodstuffs led poultry keepers to make a large reduction in their stocks. Eggs are scarce, supplies being smaller and prices higher - than for years. Washington reports that Representative Hamil offered a joint resolution seeking to have Congress suggest to President Wilson that he should refuse to receive Sir Auckland Geddes as Ireland's diplomatic representative, and should receive, instead Dr. McGarten, the Irish Republic's Minister. No action was taken on the resolution.

The Legislative' Council of Fiji is now sitting. There are many new /fecal Bills, providing for trading licenses, doubled stamp duties, increased export tax on copra, an increase of ten shillings per ton on copra, and an increase of ten shillings per ton-on sugar- An Income Tax Bill has been introduced, providing for a minimum income t £1000) tax of five per cent., graduated to 3s 6d in the £.

During January, Februnry, and Marc!), 8722 companies were registered in England, with an aggregate nominal capital of 280 millions. The actual capital issues in January, February, March and April aggregated £192,811,487. The significance of these figures is shown by a comparison with the first quarter of 1910, when the rubber boom was at its height. Then 1753 companies were registered, with a capital of 53J millions.

Replying to Mr. Spoor, in the House of Commons, Mr. Bonar Law agreed that the territory now occupied by Poland exceeded the boundaries assigned to Poland by the Supreme Council. Colonel Wedgwood suggested in the House of Commons that the Polish Government should be informed that ni amount of fighting would alter the boundaries. Mr. Bonar Law replied that Poland was quite aware of it. The Government was not supporting the Polish attack on Russia, and morally and materially it would now put pressure on Poland in the direction pi peac^
