ASSISTED IMMIGRANTS.
UNDER IMPERIAL SCHEME. ARRIVALS BY REMUERA. Among the 430 third-class passengers on the Remuera which arrived Rt' Auckland were a number of nominated immigrants and immigrants under the Imperial overseas settlement scheme. The nominated immigrants»totalled 42 adults and 17 children, and the others 27 adults and 21 children. The former are assisted by the New Zealand Government to the extent of one-third of their passage money for a four-berth cabin. The present fare is £39, of which £l3 is paid by the' New Zealand Government, the remainder being pa.id by the passenger. The immigrants coming out under the overseas settlement scheme are assisted by the Imperial Government, which pays their passage .out. Before they arc isfy the High Commissioner in.London that tlf j are the type that is required in this country. They are then given their passage, and when they arrive here transport is provided for them to their final destination. Those who arrived are either going direct to relatives or to employment which has been found for them in advance. A number of the men, when interviewed, seemed to be enthusiastic over their prospects in the new country. One, a motor mechanic by profession, spoke of making a start in Fiji, Where he hopes ultimately to go into business on his own account. Another, a clerk by necessity, and a musician by taste, hopes to be abfe to make a living by the professional use of his talents. AH.seemed to be dubious over their prospects for the next few days, and many and varied were the inquiries of the prospects of the strike settlement. One little lady came into the cabin with a jubilant face. She had just seen her husband leaning over the barrier, and he had been able to tell her that he had to cycle eightynide miles to meet her.
