CLIFTON. 8 o'clock last night the secretary of tae Clifton Club received the following wire from the secretary of tho Star Club; "StarUlrton match postponed. No ground. Arrange later date. Prince's visit. No gate. S?J so a|!ree - Have notified Union." Tlie Ctirtoii Club state it is utterly impossible to postpone now as some players were already on their way from up tho coast. In the meantime, the chairman of the Union, hearing of the difficulty re a playing ground through the Recreation Grounds being closed for the Prince's visit, and all other grounds j being in use, interviewed members of the I committee of the Tukapa Club with a view j to obtaining the use of Westefn Park for J tfte game. There Is little doubt Tukapa will give the ground for the match, and tlie Tukapa-High School junior match, which was to have been played on Western Park at 3 p.m., will in that event be held on one of the High School grounds at the Racecourse. A notice relating to the definite arrangements will be posted at the Regal Slioo Store before 11 o'clock. By this re-arrangeiment of grounds there will be no necessity t-"' posti pane any matches. NOTES AND COMMENTS. Owing to the large number of fixtures set down for decision each week, secretaries of clubs are invited to communicatri the results of all matches other than the senior matches for publication In Monday's and Friday's Dally News. Old Boys have withdrawn from trie Saturday second grade competition, and the teams drawn against them will have a bye In order to fit in with, tho High Srtw,., holidays, the date of which lias been altered the fourth grade Saturday fixtures have been re-drawn. In the third grade competition tlio matches set down for decision next Saturday havo been postponed for turoe weeks, and those arranged for May 29th will bo played next Saturday. The correct fixtures 'are published above. There Is still a shortage of referees, and unless some old players come to tho assistance of the Referees' Association, it Is difficult to see how It will be possible to provide referees for all matches. It is decidedly unfair to ask any referee to take two games in one afternoon. Clifton had no difficulty in defeating Tukapa iilst week. The men of tho river port promise to bo a very strong combination this year, both back and forward. The club has alivava had a strong vanguard, and this year with the return of "Mlek" Cain, and the assistance of Soffe, Puller, Taylor, McDavttt and Co., the forwards should be particularly strong The backs also are a solid lot, and though the majority of them—including (ieorge (2), Coodwin and Coleman—have been playing the game for very many years, they still are able to keep tho younger plavnioying. Coleman, who has been at Awakluo all the summer, and is in good form, is said to havo played right up to top form, in his prime Coleman was ono of the most vwsatllo men that has ever donned the jersey for Tarannki. being equally at home in anv position. Coutts, ex-Stratford and Taranalii representative, and Pennlal, ex-Star player also played fine games. Charlie Brown, captain of the Soldier All Blacks is getting right into top form He Played a great game on Saturday for Tulinpa, and on several occasions, though im against strong opposition, set his rearguard oioving In masterly style. Star had a very weal: team opposed to Old Boys oil Saturday, quite a number of their players being absent owing to influen«a. Bertrand, ex-Taranaki representative, imowed glimpses of his old form, whilst Jenkins, the young full-back played a fine gamie, taking the ball well and lining nicely. Among tho forwards Spence was always on the ball Two old-timers in Stroud mid Lowe assisted Stars and though palpably out of form did tlielr bit, Stroud's line kicking was an eveopener to many of the present-day players, whilst he showed that he had not forgotten how to placo kick. Old Boys havo a. fine set of backs, and once tliey acquire combination will be hard to beat. Sykes, at five-elghtlis. made some fine openngs. The forwards appear to be a bit light, but all are very willing. hl'ttV'/"!™" ,0 est ' raa,e tho strength of tile United team, as they have not vet been tried out. Tho team picked to meet Old Boys to-day seems fairly strong. Considerable Interest is manifested aloii" the coast in the meeting of Rahotu and Okato seniors. Each team is stronger than last year, and is confident of winning. It Is stated that the railway hold-up will prevent tiree of the Rahotu bac],*s from returning in time to participate in the match. The Rugby Union has alreadv had Inquiries from Canterbury and Southland, asking whether the Taranakl representative team will be journeying that far this season. it Is doubtful now whether tlie match arranged botwe-n the Soldier All Blanks and Wellington representatives for Wednesdov next as part of the programme for the Prince's visit, will eventuate. Unless the train strike Is settled, it will be difficult to get the soldier team together. Jack Stohr, Tukapa, Taranakl, and New Zealand representative, who toured South Africa 'vith the Soldier All Blacks, is at present }ew Plymouth, bidding farewell to his old friends. Jack has Accepted an nppolntHpnt In a chemical laboratory at one or the Jnhnnnesburg mines, and leaves Wellington on Thursday by the TJlimaroa to join the i Demosthenes in Australia. It is Jack's in- ! tentlon to don the jersey over there, and nil footballers will join in wishing him the host cf luck, and will loo'c forward to seeing him tour New Zealand with the Springboks In the neir futtp-e. During tho South African war a team from iho 4th and r.th Contingents was picked to Way. South Africa, whom they defeated bv 17 points to nil. H. L! Abbott, afterwards i member of the rnginal AH Blacks, then euite a lad scored three of the tries. At (ho South African veterans' dinner.
