DISTRICT NEWS.

WAMTOI-TOl. (From Our Own Correspondent). Owing, no doubt, to the wet night, on!) thiee householders put in an appearance at the schoolroom on Monday evening, consequently no new committee was elected. A pleasant little dance was held in the CJrenui hall on Monday evening, -as there were a fair amount of delicacies left over from the afternoon tea on Sunday. Owing to the wet night the attendance was not so large as It would have been, but those present enjoyed themselves thoroughly, the music being contributed by some of the latUes and gentlemen, whilst Mr, E Pepperell carried out the duties of M.C. most efficiently. Tiia friends of Mr. .las. Hawkins learned with regret of his death at New Plymouth last week. The late Mr. Hawkins was proprietor of the Urenui Hotel for a considerable period, taking over the business from the late Mr. Stewart McGuinness some twelve years ago. Mr. Sid Sutton is erecting a new residence nn tho remaining portion of his farm at the Mlmi, and several lorry loads of building material have arrived there during the past few days. .411 roads will lead to New Plymouth on Friday, and seats in the various motor buses, will be at a premium. The early hour at i which the celebration to welcome the Prince; takes place will. necessitate an early start, I and some of the youngsters are talking about; getting ready overnight. 1 Those advocates for the manufacture of skim milk cheese should not fall to read the artlclo in the last Issue of tho Dairyman, contributed by Mr. R. T. Archer"(senior dairy inspector) and Mr. 0. C. 'Sawerß (cheese expert) on experiments conducted to demonstrate that milk should be paid for according to it 3 butter-fat content. The experiments prove moat conclusively that the richer the milk is In fat, tho richer it Is in other solids, and It is the latter (not the water) in milk which represents its food value, and, as a natural sequence, its commercial value, The article is most interesting and well worth perusal. •An invention whlclv is going to do away with a lot of the drudgery in cheeseinaking is the now Dunn curd-mixer. The machine can bo attached to any class of agitator, and is said to he absolutely efficient and sanitary. Some of our local factories might do worse than give it a trial. Our local dairy company, at its meeting last week, let two more contracts for some lfiO cords of firewood, evidently making provision against future coal shortages. lu view of the expected increase In the milk supply,- I understand the White Cliffs Dairy Company intends tc enlarge its manufacturing plant during the coming season. At the unveiling of the Memorial Stone erected In the Urenui cemetery to the memory of the lads from this district who fell during tho late war, in response to Mr. W. T. Jennings' request, srtmo fifty returned men formed in lines to do honor to their dead comrades, whilst Mr.. Walker sounded "The ! Last Post" ; Our member, Mr, W. T. Jennings, at all time* speaks most earnestly on any subject. ; whether political or otherwise, and the simple and feeling manner in which he paid tribute tn the memory of the fallen hoys at the un- | veiling ceremony at Urenui on Sunday last, deeply impressed those who had tho pleasure of hearing him. Mr. Jennings paid a high tribute to Mrs. I Rockett. (the secretary) and the Ladles' Commitleo who, have worked so hard to erect such an appropriate memorial to those of the district who made the supreme sacrifice, and also alluded to the handsome sum which had been handed over to the Hospital Board by Mr A. tf Halcombe, on behalf of the residents, to be devoted to the Hall for the nurses .at tho hospital. It is estimated that over 500 people partook of the afternoon tea provided by' the ladies' committee in the Urenu; "Hall on Runday last, and as a considerable number went home immediately after the unveiling ceremony, there must have been well over fitiO present, which was all that could be expected from a weather point of view. A feature of tho unveiling ceremony at Urenui on Sunday was the singing of the hymns by the combined choir from WaitaTa, the rendering of fhe anthem "What are These" (J. Strainer)' being greatly appreciated | by thoso present. Though the .season is well advanced, and 1 most of the cows will shortly he milked only j onee a day, the supply is still holding up ; remarkably well, and is much greater than I that received for tho corresponding period I last season. the quantity of ! cheese produced per gallon of milk is also in excels of previous records, and there should be some fairly decent bonus cheques paid out. this yew. I understand active preparations arc being made by the Uruti Pierrots to 1 hold an entertainment in the TJruti Hal! early In May, As there are some talented amateurs In that district, a most successful performance should result, and the funds of tho local Tennis Club and Hall should benefit substantially. .

Mr. Newton King held n most successful sheep and cattle sale at Uruti on Saturday last, when ruling rates were fully maintained. High prices were also realised for wethers at the Urenui sale on Monday.
