WAITARA.
(From Our Ou.i Correspondent), The annual meeting of St. John's Church parishioners took place on Tuesday evening: The financial statement of accounts was deemed to be very satisfactory. Mr. Stead ivas re-appointed minister's warden and Mr. Kedwood the people's warden. Mr. Westerman is to be asked to act 011 the vestry. The funeral of Mr. Thos. Elliot took place on Tuesday, the remains being followed by large numbers of old settlers. As the funeral passed through the town an old Maori woman, who had had dealings with the late Mr. Elliot for a number of years, set up a wailing in the old Maori way. A special meeting of the Waitara Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening for the purpose of considering the balance-sheet for the year ending March J919, also notices of motion as follows:—That on and after May 1 next the library subscriptions be raised to 3s per quarter or 10s per annum; that on and Ufter May 1 next the library be closed to subscribers each morning. The balance sheet was adopted without comment. In regards to raising the library subscriptions councillors thought no objection would be raised. It had to be remembered that books and papers, like everything else, had increased in price enormously, and he thought that an alteration should be made, so as to meet the expenditure. It was resolved that the increase be made, also that the library (not the reading room) be closed each morning.
