SETTLING SOLDIERS.
41,380 MEN ASSISTED . AMOUNT INVOLVED £16,000,000. (By Telegraph.—SpEWal Reporter.) Inglewood, Last Niglit. Impressive figures showing the extent to which the Government had repatriated the returned soldiers of the Dominion were quoted by the Hon- D. H. Guthrie, Minister in charge of Soldiers' Settlements, and chairman of the Ministerial Repatriation Board, at to-night'r> dinner to colcjirate the formation of the new Inglewood County. The Minister stated that amongst the many important matters arising out of the war demanding serious attention was the repatriation of the soldiers. Over 100.0011 men from New Zealand had served overseas, and of the number re(urned demobilisation cards had been issued to 77,3(i5. Employment, had been 1 ound for 10.000, 4000 had been placed in new occupations, while financial assistance had been granted to 11,439, amounting to £006,244. Besides the work of the Repatriation Department the. Lands Department had settled 0.402 men on farms at an outlav of .-CIO.STfi.B34, and 034!) in town dwellings at an outlay of £4,137.05(1, and altogether 44,380 had been assisted bv the . iwo departments, involving about .-e 10,000,000. In addition to the figures mentioned private estate? totalling 210,000 acres, which were being prepared for soldier settlement purposes, had cost £1,800,000. Hp to the present 1425 men had been placed on 332.832 acres, 8-15 men on SSfi,1)00 acres of Crown Lands, and 4132 men had been assisted to purchase 783,000 acres. It was a record of which any country might, well be proud, and without suggesting invidious comparisons lie could say that no other part of the Empire couid equal the record of New Zealand(Applause).
