A cable from Brisbane says advices received state that Mr. B. Morton, a member of the. Legislative Council,' has become heir to Karl Dueie, owing to the death of the heir. Lord Ilenry Reynolds. A resolution of sympathy with Mr. and Mrs. CVP. Baker, of Eltham, m the recent loss of their son, Keith, was passed by the Board of Governors of the New Plymouth High Schools on Monday evening. The Hon. D. H, Guthrie. (Minister for Lands), who will visit Inglewood on Friday, has notified Mr- S. G. Smith, M P., that he is tumble to extend his visit to New Plymouth. Mr. Guthrie will arrive at Inglewood to-morrow night, and will receive deputations on .Friday. In the evening lie will attend the inglewood County banquet.
The death of Mr. D. Stewart, late manager of the Wellington branch of the Union Bank of Australia, is announced from Ileretaungn. The late Mr. Stewart, who resided at Heretaunga for some 'years, retired from the bank on superannuation at the end of March last.
Sir James Allen, the High Commis-sioner-elect, left Wellington for the South Island on Monday in order to pay liis farewell visit to Dunedin before leaving for the Old Country to take up the duties of his new position. Sir James is due back in Wellington about next Wednesday, and it is expected that he will sail for London on the Corinthic on or jibout April 30th. The Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works, accompanied by his private secretary (Mr. McAlister'), and the district Public Works engineer (Mr. L. B. Campbell) left Stratford yesterday afternoon by motor car for 'Whangamomona. The party intended to stay last night at Whangamomona, and to go on to Matiere to-day, going through to Taumaranui to-morrow, where they will catch the express for Auckland, if however, the roads beyond Whangamomona ard impossible the party will probably return to Stratford to-d'ay. At Monday night's meeting of the New Plymouth High Schools Board of Governors, reference was made to tho approaching departure from New Zealand of Sir James A'len, who, during his term as Minister of Defence, had several times visited the boys' school, notably on the occasion when he presented the Imperial Challenge Shield for rifle shooting. The Board therefore resolved to write to Sir James Allen acknowledging the interest he had taken in the school, and wishing him Success in his new office.
