DEFENCE PORTFOLIO.
OFFERI& TO HON. J. Q. COATES. NOT YET ACCEPTED. (By Telegraph.— Own Correspondent.) mt Wellington, Last Night. The portfolio of Defence has been offered to the Hon. J. G. Coates. It has not yet, been accepted, Mr. Coates having hesitated to add new duties to those ot the 1 üblic Works administration, but probably he will consent to beoome Minister for Defence for the present, He is the sole returned soldier in the Cabinet, although Mr. Hine may be back again after the Stratford by-election. The new Minister for Defence, who-c-ver he may be, will find plentr HI ' tasks awaiting him. The Defence* De. partment lias been more or leßs marking time this year pending the *a« ■ nouncement of a defence policy, and the establishment appears to have remained unnecessarily large. An energetic De. fence Minister will have important duties of reorganisation.
