STRATFORD COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The Stratford County Council met on Saturday. Present: Councillors K. Walter (chairman), T. Coleman, O'Neill, T. R. Anderson, E. \V. Hancock, W. H. Were, H. It. Wurthington, L. Baskln, and F. J Mackay, with ill* cjerk (Mr. C. H. Penn), and the engineer iMr. .T. W. Spence). ENGINEER'S REPORT. The englpcer (Mr. J. W. Spctice) reported as follows: The bank at the entrance of the Manganui Road off the Croydon Road has been ait away, making the corner safer for traffic. A considerable amouni of Ailing had to bo slone on the Salisbury Road opposite Mr. Bkedgewell's puddock gate, owing to the i'littlo breaking away the road side. North Riding (West).—The blackberries on tho Mldhirst. reserve have been cut and will be sprayed first opportunity. The work of tarring the refaced portion of tiie Walpulai HUI has been completed. Considerable delay occurred in carrying out this work, owing to broken weather, and a mishap to the tar sprayer. The formation work on the Derby Road Is not sufficiently advanced to receive a shingle coating. South Riding.—The contract on tho Pukengalju Road has been completed to Mr. Phillips' gate and about 65 yards of maintenance! metal placed on the roadside. One hundred and nine yards of boulders were crushed for (maintenance on the Waihapa Road. A start has bee-n made with the refaclng of the eastern side of the lilil on the Wingrove Road \vith crushed pit metal. On the clay portion of the Skinner Road a number of •settlers gave very considerable assistance in forming up tho road, which had got into very bad order. East Riding (Toko).—The road to the Toko station has been repaired, and several deck plunks on the bridge on this road have been renewed. Tho timber for rcdecking the whole | bridge lias been stacked at the site. Consider- j able repair work has beeu carried out on j Ahuroa Road East. The refaclng on the j part of this road at Mr. Milncr's property has ; been completed. As soon as opportunity offers the roller will be serut up to roll this por- ; tiou which at present Is in a rough state. The fences on both sides of the eastern bridge approach at the llulnga factory are in had repair; to renew same would require about at) posts besides battens. On tho flolco Road opposite Mr. O'Connor's property it will be ■ necessary to out a ditch for chains, to prevent the water and silt being carried 1 across the Road. j

East Riding (Douglas),—'The grader was run over the Strathmoro Saddle and is reported to have done good work. The drain on the Douglas South Road is well in hand and ehould soon be competed. East Riding (Hulroa). —On the' Makurl Road East where the scour took place during recent ruins, banking up and blinding work has been carried out. The fillings on the Douglas North Road at Mr. Frnser's wool shed, and at tho foot of the Saddle near Mr. Andersou's. have both given considerable trouble and wi*< require further attention. The bridge on the Aknma Road at Mr. Stanford's lias been repaired, the whole of the decking being renewed. On the Makurl Rond the bridge at Mr. Beet-ham's lias been repaired but will require practically to be redecked. West Riding.— I The whole of the boulders on the Palmer Road and also those taken out of the Mangatoki Stream have been flushed, and what has not been used in refacing Onunake Road has been distributed for maintenance. The work' of refaclng part of Opumike Road near Olemow's cutting is at present in hand and w!l be completed in a tew days.

Mangaehu Riding.—During the month tho grader has been run over the following roads: Mangaehu, Kaltieki, Mangaehu South, M;mguotuku, Taihore, Brewef-Taihore, and Strathmore Saddle. Arrangements have been made to have the slips on the Manga Road cleared away. CORRESPONDENCE. From Messrs. Charles Bayly and 15. Marfoll promising to contribute £4O and £BO respectively or amount required to complete, but not to exceed tho engineer's estlmale, towards the cost of the deviation on the Toko Road.—Decided that work be proceeded I with providing everything was in ordw, MM. Total, £ls. r lo. The levy would be made at a speeall meeting on April 27.—Received. CU.MIE ROAD. Thirteen ratepayers residing on the Cllmle Road, wrote drawing tile Council's attention to tho highly dangerous condition of the cultert between Messrs. Oliver's and Nollle's properties, and asked that the Council should linve the matter attended to promptly as tho culvert might, collapse at the Hist heavy rain, and be detrimental to getting tholr mill! to tho factory.—Decided to Inform the petitioners that the engineer was giving the matter his consideration. GENERAL. It was decided to purchase a. lar boiler and engine for the East Riding (Gordon Road) for £ 120. tho cost to be charged against the loan account. In the motion of Cr. Coleman, seconded by Cr. Worthington, a vote of thanks was passed to Mr. .T. It. Hino for bis efforts In securing the first instalment of the £90,000 loan money. The chairman intimated that. £20,000 received nut of the £1)0,000 loan would be allocated as follows, on the basis of the rates raiolved fritin eaqii riding: North Klcjinfr £2OOO, South Riding £4700, East Riding £7BOO, West Riding £4300.
