April 17No news was received in Stratford today regarding tlie issue of the writ for the by-election. The electoral roll therefore cannot close at the earliest before fi p.m. on Monday. Enrolments are still coming in from day to day. A meeting of the Stratford Football Club was lieid last evening, Mr. J. lizard presiding. The balance-sheet for lasi year, which showed a credit balance of £lO 15s .Id, was adopted. It is reported that the Club lias a large number of players available this season and the prospects of the Club appear to be very bright. A record was put up by the Stratford County Council to-day, in that the councillors got through the business before the luncheon adjournment. At halfpast twelve, the usual time for th c adjournment, the council found itself at a dead end, having completed its business. The councillors looked at each other ill dismay, and one member timidly suggested that there was no need to come back after lunch. "But it all seems so strange; have we no business we can do this afternoon!" aswd another member. No further business could be discovered, however, and the Council distinguished itself by closing down earlier than it has done for many months past. Mr. H. A. Arthur, chief clerk to the Public Works Department at Stratford, has been promoted to inspector for the Wellington district, and will leave to take up his-aiew duties next month.
