The, Governor-General announces that the King Ims been pleased to appoint Admiral of the Fleet Viscount Jellicoe of Scapa, G.C.H., 0.M., G.C.V.0., to Slw , oeed the Earl of Liverpool as GovernorGeneral and Commander-in-Chief of the Dominion of New Zealand. The distinguished career of Lord JelIjcoe was brought prominently before the world when, in the critical days of 1014, he assumed command of the Orand Fleet, and though his work is the subject of controversy, the preparedness of the fleet and the closing of the North Sea to the German Navy stand as splendid tributes to this great sailor. More recently still—last year—XcVr Zealand became more intimate with Lord Jellicoe through his visit to the Dominion to report upon the future naval policy of the country. So that in addition to possessing the attributes of a. leader of Empire, Lord .Tollieoe may be said to be equipped with an advantage denied to other Governors of recent times—a close acquaintance with New Zealand, its people, ami its problems. Lord Jellicoe was born on December 5, ISoO, so that he comes to New Zealand in his sixty-first year. In 1902 he married Florence Gwendoline, naughtsj of Sir Cliwles C'avzer. There are four daughters and one son, the latter a baby. Lord Jellicoe entered the Nary in 1572, and his first experience of active service was in the Egyptian War in ISS2. He received the'lOiedive bronze star. He was command -• of the Victoria, which was wrecked in ISO:?, and then followed a long period of service 'u China waters. At Peitsang lie was severely wounded, find he received many orders for distinguished service in China. In lf)()7, he was promoted Rear-Admiral, and the. rank of Admiral came when he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Home Fleets in 1014.
