In the Senate Mr. Pearce introduced a Bill cheating a trust to deal with the surplus canteen funds which have been transferred to a Board of Trustees who will deal with applications for assistance from the fund for relatives of deceased soldiers. In the House of Representatives Mr. Hughes stated that the conditions under whidi the Government control of shipping was lifted were that no ship should be taken off the coast without pehntosion and no increase in fares and freights made without submitting it to tbe Government. He also said ,he would ask the House to express an ojunion on the salaries of Minfeterg and heads of departments, which Were grossly inadequate. iit. Hughes, referring to arbitration, siid the question should be looked at from a non-party standpoint. The Ministry, hoped the proposed conference < would formulate some scheme which perh4{>i would take the form of one great Crandl of Labor charged with the preservation of industrial peace, but until the employers realised that the employee was a full partner they would not get & satisfactory solution.
