THE STRATFORD BY-ELECTION

MR. J. B. HIKE'S CAMPAIGN. The following lias been supplied:— At Mr. Hine's meeting of lady'workers at Stratford on Tuesday, ninety ladies were present. Mr_ and Mrs. Hine were present, and were received with enthusiasm. The candidate gave a. short address, indicating the progress of his campaign, and expressing his satisfaction with the encouraging results throughout the electorate At the YVaitoi school on Monday night, there were about sixty electors present, Mr. R. .T. Bakewell presiding. The candidate spoke on educational and other matters, and at the close of the meeting wa saceonled hearty cheers from the audience. A motion was moved by Mr. Reesby, and duly seconded, "That a vote of thanks lie accorded to Mr. Hine for his address, and no confidence in the Massey Government." An amendment was moved by Mr. .1. Hunter, nad seconded by Mr. .'lames, "That a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to Mr. Hine for his address, and .confidence in him as a suitable member for.the Stratford electorate." The amendment was declared carried by an overwhelming majority. Mr. Hino's Toko committee met on Monday evening, and the workers were encouraged by the results obtained in the Toko district to assist Mr. Hine to win pride of place at the poll.

MR. MASTERS' CAMPAIGN. The following Ims been supplied:— It was ti scene of wild enthusiasm that greeted Mr. Musters at Midliirst on Monday evening, the hall being crowded in every corner. In opening, the petition Was dealt with briefly. The speaker favored proportional representation, providing the country quota was maintained. With reference to his opponent's action over giving the railwaymen Is per day rise, Mr. Masters stated that what lie" said, and still maintained, was that Mr. Hine had protested in Parliament, against the rise, and, further, had questioned the loyalty of the railway men, stating that their organisation had (lis(Traced themselves in asking for (lie rise.
