PROFITEERING PENALTY.

A GROCER PINED £IOO. By Tolcjraph.—Press, Assn.—Copyright. Wellington, April 12. Bertie Smith, grocer, charged with profiteering by selling Mellin's Food at 3s 9d per bottle, a gross proiit of 64 per cent., was fined £IOO and £7 costs. In his judgment, Mr. Page, S.M., said the price charged by defendant for a bottle of Mellin's Food represented a profit of G4 per cent, upon the cost. It was not easy for the court to say what was a reasonable rate of commercial profit in respect to any particular goods, but he thought the ultimate test must be the rate of interest that the handling of the goous would produce upon the capital invested in the business, after making pro- | vision for proper outgoings and contingencies. lie based his decision as above on the balance-sheets relating to defendant's business put before the court.
