Thereafter Wells boxed confidently, and seemed to have McGoorty at his mercy in the eighth round, hitting him around the ring and severely punishing him. McGoorty rave a wonderful .display, however, In the ninth when the crowd had expected Wells to finish tho fight The American showed extraordinary cleverness In defence. Wells did not attempt to gain a. knock out. but was content to box In great style. This enabled JlcOoorty to recover, and he nearly knocked ou. Wells in the twelfth round with a hook to the point of the chin. Weils uppexcut at n.most the same Instant, and both were shaken Both fought. hard for a knock out m the remainder of tho round. Tliev were greatly distressed, and appeared likely to drop from exhaustion Tlils was a thrilling round, hut Wells was superior thereafter. He downed McGoorty in tho fourteenth, and the latter gradually weakened, only his supreme rloverenss and gamenoss enabling him to reach the sixteenth round
