DISEASE IN FRUIT.
FIRE BLIGHT AT AUCKLAND. A SERIOUS MATTER. The reported infection of oichards in the Auckland district by the fire blight disease lias led to an 'inspection being made by the officers of the horticultural division of the Department of Agriculture of the whole of the orchards in the Henderson and Swanson districts and parts of Oratia, Waikumete, Waitakere, and other districts adjacent to Auckland to locate any evidence of the disease on pip fruits. In several instances suspicious indications were discovered, and specimens wore forwarded to the biological laboratory at Wellington for identification. Reports received at the Auckland office of the Department of Agriculture state that some of the specimens taken from orchards at Henderson and Waikumete have been identified as fire blight. This is the first indication that the pest has invaded the commercial fruit-growing area of the Auckland district, and tho matijr is regarded seriously by the officials of the department.
