THE ARBITRATION ACT.
AUCKLAND MAYOR'S CRITICISM. "I think that the time has come when \re should consider the operation of the Arbitration Act," said the Mayor of Auckland '(Mr. J. II Gnnson) the other day. "Tiie legislation under which the Arbitration Court and the Conciliation Councils do their work is a good many years old, and needs to be reviewed. We want a more rapid and competent tribunal. .1 use the word 'competent,'" explained Mr. Uunson, "not as reflecting in any way on the present court. 1 mean 'competent' in the sense of having a first-hand knowledge of whatever trade it has to deal with. Unless we get such a tribunal we shall have much trouble in the future. The time lias gone by when men were willing to wait weeks or months for a decision. Crises arise frequently, and when they do arise we want them settled at once and by competent tribunals" Mr. Gunson explained that through his experience as Mayor, in having to deal with several hundred municipal employees, he had come more and more to realise the need for such a change as he had indicated.
