U.S. AND PEACE.

THE TREATY DEADLOCK. NO fubther ahead. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received April 6, 8.25 p.m. New York, April 5. The Washington correspondent of the New York Timea says Senator G. M. Hitchcock (Leader of the Democrats), lias predicted that the League Covenant will be separated from the Treaty and offered as an amendment to the joint peace resolution.

Republicans have expressed surprise that Senator Hitchcock considered it possible to separate the Covenant from the Treaty, and said they would offer the Treaty terms as an amendment to the peace resolution. Some Republicans said the Covenant would be rejected, since the peace resolution was intended only to declare peace between Germany and the United States, while the League, of which Germany is not yet a member, concerned the Allies and the United States. —Aus.-N.Z.
