STRATFORD.
(rrom Our Own Correspondent.) (AH communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. H. J. Hopklus, bookseller, will receive urompl attention.) i April 5. There was a general exodus from Stratford to-day, owing to there being no attractions in the town, excepting the bowling tournament. the morning the railway station bore' an animated appearance, and the booking clerks had a very busy time issuing tickets. The trots at Hawera drew the greatest portion of the crowd, over 250 tickets being issued for Die racecourse. Hawera tickets were not issued for use on the mail train but in order to reach the course early a good number of people purchased tickets for Patea. In addition to the tickets issued for Hawera and Patea, about 150 passengers went to New Plymouth, and over 100 Ngaere where a special holiday programme was provided. In spite of the benzine shortage most motor car owners were out with their curs, having managed by various means to secure sufficient benzine for the day's outing. In the evening the attractions in Stratford included a special programme at the King's Cinema, and a dance at the Town Hall, both of which were very largely attended. A fair'number of people have taken advantage of the Easter holidays to move into new houses, and to-night there were two empty dwellings in the boroiurh—an unusual happening for Stratford. The housing problem is becoming more acute all the time, even though the number of new houses in course 6f. erection is larger than has been the case for a considerable time. The Methodist Church was crowded last night when the Rev. R. B. Tinsley preached his farewell sermon, prior to leaving for the Addington (Christchurch) Circuit. The new minister, the Rev. L. B. Scale, will arrive in Stratford about April 14 and will take the pulpit for the first time on Simdav, April 18. The new wards at the hospital arc rearing completion and, in all probability, will be officially opened about the end of the month.
