The mighty Renown,' escorted by the Calcutta, arrived off the quiet, sun-kissed Barbadian roadstead on the evening of the 25th ult., which was the signal for an outburst of local activity. The Governor, Sir Charles O'Brien, and Admiral Everett, in uniform, and the Executive Councillors, top-hatted and frock-coated, coming on'the quarterdeck with dignified ceremony, were received by the Prince, who gave an official dinner jjaj-t- ind a dance to two hundred guest;: " evening. Many lovely Barbadian , ; |g> in Paris and New York gowns danceii vith officers in blue, white and gold, and on the Prince's promenade decks, in the rich and brilliant glow of the illuminations, it made a wonderfully beautiful picture, with the peaceful tropic island in the hackground. The ship herself, suffused with light softened by passing through awnings of brocade and white stripes, looked to the guests coming aboard like a great flower resting on .dark waters, which was jewelled by the reflection of the tro-' pic stars. The music of the ship's perfect band floated across the waves, and in this romantic letting Barbadians received their first impression of the Prince's gay and gracious individuality. —Aus.-N.Z.
