GREAT EXPLOSION.
BURSTING OF A GASOMETER. NO CASUALTIES. By Telegraph.—Presr Assa,—Copyrlßht. Received April 5, 12.3 a.m. Melbourne, April 5. The great gasometer in South Melbourne, containing three million cubic feet of gas, exploded in the forenoon with tremendous force, the flames leaping to f great height.
Windows were smashed and houses shaken in the neighbourhood, but beyond the collapse of the gasometer, no very serious damage was done. There were 50 employees at work, but they and the residents of the neighbourhood escaped, excepting six, who suffered from burns, which arc not of a serious nature.—Ans.-NZ. Cable Assn.
