CHARGE OP ILL-TREATMENT DISMISSED. Nelson, March 30. A country schoolmaster was charged in the .Magistrate's Court with ill-treat-ing a boy of 11 years by cutting one of his fingers with a knife. The injury was inflicted (luring a lesson on lizards, the child having said lie would like to see a lizard's tail cut off. The teacher, in giving evidence, .faitl that he scratched the iioy's finger thinking that that would impress upon his mind that ha should not be cruel to animal?. The Magistrate (Mr. Mnunsell), in giving judgment, said that the cut was more than a scratch, but was not a substantial injury. Defendant was not justified in using a sharp instrument, and his discretion had not been wisely used. It would, however, be straining the language of the Act to say that the child had lieon ill-treated. The information was dismissed.
