WELLINGTON MYSTERY.
MARKS ON A DEAD WOAIAJvV
MADE BY A MAN OR A SHARK?
Tiie inquest concerning the mysterloitt death of a married woman named Eliza Jane Hebbend, whose body was found in the Wellington harbor on Friday morning last, has been adjourned until! April 1-2. The case presents some extraordinary features, and while it has been stated. that the unfortunate woman'< death' w&a brought about by foul play, th» nature of the facial wounds gives Tim to various theories (says the Dominion), Even now there is an element of doubt as to whether the woman wm done to death or not, and from an exaainitiofc of certain facts it doe* not appear that the injuries were inflicted b* human agency. When picked up in the harbor tfl* deceased was fully dressed,,and not oftfe part of her clothing was dUa*r*nMd.> Evon her hat was intact, and bar' S»| untouched—in fact, arranged as .ftAi it had been done up only a few moments' before. The left ear was completely gone, and there was a circular cut near' the left lower lip, with a clean panotuip penetrating through the cheek a littfei to the left of this cut. There were nbj bruises surrounding these; wounds, no* were there any other marks on the body. Further, the body had not been in tb»! water long before it was disco vers#j floating off Pipitea Point. It has now been suggested that the wounds were inflicted by, a fhrlr, possibly a young shark, while the woman was t| i the water. In support of this theort. it has been said that the unfortunaw woman may have fallen into the wsrtet at some spot where the depth was nott great and may have floated off, to be attacked later by the fish. No effort is being spared by the poliot* to solve the mystery. A search of the waterfront has afforded- 00 I clue. ~)
