THE STRATFORD BY-ELECTION
MR. MASTERS AT DOUGLAS. The following report lias been supplied by Mr. Masters' Committee: — Mr. Masters addressed a very representative meeting of settlers at Douglas on Saturday evening. Mr. Wilmlmnst, the chairman, paid a tribute to Mr. Masters for his tenacity in securing grants for the Douglas School in face of the fact that the Government had previously on two occasions turned the proposal down. The audience listened with keen interest to the speaker's remarks on the political questions of the day as they affected the farmer and the workers. The candidate raised his speech to a verv high standard when he pleaded for higher salaries and better living conditions for the school teachers in order to attract to the profession the Iciest talent possible. The teachers were responsible for the moulding of the character of the nation and in no sense should BUch a noble profession be measured in pounds, shillings and pence. Mr. Masters reiterated his principles of the State undertaking the shipping of the produce of the producer. The speaker was heartily applauded at the conclusion of which proved to be one of the best addresses ever given in Douglas. MAJOR HINE AT TOKO. i (Prom Our Own Correspondent). ; The Toko Hall was crowded on Satl urday night, when Major Hine delivered a political address. Mr. E. Marfell occupied the chair. The candidate was subjected to considerable interruption throughout his speech from a noiev sec- | tion of the audience, but he was in excellent lighting form and frequently scored at the expense of his interjeetors. At the concttision of his addresss, the candidate answered a number of questions, and a motion of thanks and confidence in him as their representative in Parliament, moved by Mr. M. T. Phillips and seconded by Mr- Will MeGuinness, was declared carried. A strong local committee to further Major Hine's candidature was set up after the meeting. MEETINGSMajor J. B. Hine will address the electors at Douglas to-night, Wharehuia on Wednesday, and Tariki on ThiirsSav evening. A meeting of Major Hine's ladies' committee will be held in the Parish (Tall to-dav at -2.30 p.m. Mr. Robert Masters will speak in the Whangamomona Hall to-night at S n'floek and in the Public Hall, Tahora, to-morrow at 12 noon. A meeting of the general committo? of the Stratford Liberal and Labor r.eague will bo. held in the Parish Hall at 7.30 10-morrow.
