COUNTY WHEEL TAX.
COUNCIL'S LATEST MOVE. A communication was received from the Taranaki County Council yesterday from the Minister of Internal Affairs, intimating that it had been decided to set up a commission to go into the question of the Council's authority to raise money by means of levying a Wheel tax and advising the Council that the tax must not be collected in the meantime. The chairman said the position Was serious for the County, especially in view of the fact that the last session of Parliament had conferred similar nowers 011 other County Councils. Mr. Cosinett said while in Wellington he had intcTviewfed the Minister, who said that there had been gueii opposition to the Council's proposals that the Government was obliged to step in. Mr. Connett said he had also seen the Premier, who had said h c was not aware that any. thing was likely to come before the coming .session of Parliament in the way of legislation to overcome the difficulty, fn view of the opposition to the establishment of toll gates he' thought the Council should make application to the Government for a straight-out grant for assistance in its work. It was ultimately decided to approach the Minister of Finance a grant of £IOOO for expenditure on the Devon, Junction, and Main South Roads. The chairman and Cr. Morton were authorised_to represent the Council before the proposed commission. Tt was decided to armly to the Minister for Public Works for permission to erect, toll gates on the Junction, Devon, and Main South Roads.
