GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE. EROSION AT THE EAST END: The General Purposes Committee of t.ie New Plymouth Borough Council met ast night, • there being present the Mayor (.Mr. Jug. Clarke), Crs. V. Grif- ! !' h - „ L - Parkin, A. S. JJrooker, W. A. Cpllis, \Y. F. Short, and F. J. Hill. In regard to the sea erosion at the i n'; 111 !' Messrs Blair Mason and Lee submitted a report, in which they stated that until a survey is made and the set of tiie sea under various conditions of wind is observed, it would be premature to lay out permanent protection works In front of the pavilion the sea had e it the beach down to an extent which threatened the foundations of the building- It was recommended to combat that by pavjng the eroded face with stone or day in bags, and on top of that place facme mattresses bound and pegged down securely with strong wire-J-lie facmes would break the force of the waves and prevent tho bags from being dislodged. . 6 With an on-shore wind a considerabla quant.ty of sand is being blown into re Henui R lve r, which denuded the Kg ° f ann ; l bro . u^t »> by the wave*, which, jf retained, would form sand Junes. The town clerk stated that as the matter was urgent he had authorised the erection of a groyne and the work was proceeding.
RENEWING OLD BUILDINGS. An application was received from Mr 'J' on behalf of Mr. Pasalich for a permit to make certain alterations to wooden buildings within the brick area. On account of the amount of work proposed to be done constituting practically the re-building of the premises the engineer and inspector ret? There had been several light falls of earth in tha tunnel, which would not have occurred had they been able to follow up the tun* nd cut with cementing, and fhis neeess tated the use of extra cement, which the contractor asked the Council to altT'theT for --Thc matter was referred to the consulting engineer for a report.
GOOD FRIDAY PICTURES. The New Plymouth and Waitara Pictures asked for permission to snow pic. tures at Everybody's and the People's .theatres on Good i'riday night, the programme to include a topical gazette and a seven-reel feature, "The Third floor > which was described as "an ex. ceptionally suitable subject for that wight." GENERAL. The Dunedin City Council wrote fori warding copies <if several resolutions tor which support was asked, dealing with what was regarded as the necessity of providing a national scheme of bonuses for parents of largo families.— I lie Council expressed itself in accord with the principle. The special committee set up to confer with the representatives of the Taxi Proprietors' Association reported making certain recommendations for the alteration of by-laws governing mo* tor traffic and licensing of drivers.
