WAR MEMORIAL.
MAYOR'S PROPOSAL FOU NEW PLYMOUTH. I PUBLIC MEETING TO BE TTT^t,fv ' At last night's meeting of the Kew Plymouth liorougii Council, the Mayor (Mr. James Clarke) asked tlie Council to support him in calling a public meeting to consider the question of erecting a memorial to the soldiers who fell in the recent war. Mr. Clarke said he had been consider* ing the matter for some time, and thought that fls the Council had the sec* tion opposite the railway station, public subscriptions might secure the balance of the land there, and the whole section be dedicated as a public park, in whkh a suitable memorial to the soldiers couSs be erected. He also suggested that if a municipal theatre or town hall was built there, dt would ensure tiiat <&« memorial would be always properly cared for and maintained in good order. Stteh a proposal would appeal to the whole district, and it would bo a gnat in* provement to the appearance of the' town. He felt something must be done, but he could not go to a public meeting with a scheme of that sort without first consulting the Council. If any other scheme was brought forward it could be considered by the meeting of citizens. Mr. Clarke said he thought all would be against the erection of aay sort of memorial that would be likely to fall into disrepair. Several councillors supported t&e Mayor m the idea of getting the partku. r piece of land improved, and of Meeting a memorial to the soldiers. Some, however, were opposed to the erection of a theatre on that site. It was left to the Mayor to arrange tor the calling of a meeting to consider pioposah on the lines suggested.
