FARM AND DAIRY.

STRATFORD JERSEY BREEDERS. A meeting of the Stratford branch of the New Zealand Jersey Breeders' Association was held on Saturday afternoon, the president (Mr P. Ranford) presiding over an attendance of about 211 members The chlof business was the consideration of remits for tho annual meeting of the New Zealand Jersev Breeders' Assfjcla'tlfln, which will be held shortly. Mr. E. Llnnell moved tho following remit: That It be a recommendation to the Council that a prize of £SO be given for eveTV Jersey cow giving over IOOOIbs of butter-fat In a Bemi-offlcial test, and that a further prize of £250 be awarded for anv Jersev cow breaking the world's butter-fat record Speaking to the remit, Mr. Llnnell said that the eixstlng world's record was about HOOlbs and he flrmly believed that if sufficient Inducement was offered to dairy farmers, that record could be beaten in New Zealand Some five years ago, a proposal had originated In that office from Mr. Peterson and himself for offering a prize of 2ii RUlneas for any cow Riving 2!iolbs or butter-fat., the then record being GOOlbs. That proposal was ridiculed at first, but it was carried, and had done much good. That seemed to show that all that was needed to establish new records was to offer sufficient inducement, and he firmly believed lhat in a few years Instead of New Zealand dairymen always wanting imported stock, other countries would come to New Zealand which would become an exporting country Instead. Mr. D. O'Sullivon seconded the remit, which after futher discussion was carried unanimously. Mr. R. I). Dagg "moved the following remit In pursuance of notice of motion: "That the New Zealand Jersey Breeders' Association be recommended to purchase a farm in some central district for the purpose of demonstrations " Considerable opposition was expressed against the remit on the grounds of the difficulties of conducting such a. farm, and Hie lack of sufficient funds with which to make a start. The remit was eventually lost. The chairman moved the following: "That the Council take Into consideration the desirability of subsidising the prize moneys offering In Jersey cattle sections at the various A. and P. shows throughout the Dominion, with a view to stimulating Interest Jnd adding incentive to breeders to exhibit (heir stock." Thti chairman added that his Idea was that bigger prizes should be offered, not that the A. and P. Societies should reduce the amount of prize money. He thought that the subsidies should be granted ti the principle dairy shows only, but the selection of these and other minor difficulties could lie fixed by the Council. The remit was seconded by Mr. Chalney and carried after a general discussion.
